 FS2004/FSX DOUGLAS C-54/DC-4 Skymaster

 Operations Procedures Version

By Jens Kristensen, FSAviator, and Tom Gibson

 Version 1 3/2016
***********************************************

Version 1 installs more realistic handling notes specific to military versus airline use of different variants in different decades. Multiple CalClassic Notepads become available for the first time. New VC and 2D panel content better reflects changes over time. The flight dynamics have improvements and add an extra engine variant. However, this increased accuracy requires higher levels of comprehension, judgement, and knowledge - all of which requires careful reading of the original Propliner Tutorial, the included C-54/DC-4 Tutorial, and the more detailed handling notes for each subtype. If you are not willing to make this effort, this update will do little to improve the original JBK C-54/DC4 V3 package, which should be used instead (both packages can be installed on the same machine and chosen via the Select Aircraft menu). The JBK DC-4 V3 package is available by choosing the Pan American DC-4 from http://www.calclassic.com/dc4.htm.

PLEASE NOTE: This version also assumes that you are a relatively experienced FS user and know how to make file edits, etc. on your computer. This package is not designed for beginners to propliner flying. Again, if you are just starting out we suggest you install the JBK DC-4 V3 package (the Pan American DC-4 from http://www.calclassic.com/dc4.htm).

Support available at the CalClassic Forum:

The latest and many other aircraft are available from the CalClassic Propliner Page:

Aircraft models, VC, 2D panel bitmap, and textures by Jens Kristensen
This version is compatible with addon liveries from the FS2004 JBK DC-4 V3.

Panel by Jens Kristensen, modified by Tom Gibson

Flight dynamics by FSAviator - see Reference file for detailed handling notes (F10).
This FDE is not designed for AI use - it will not work. Download AI propliners at http://www.calclassic.com/.

NOTE: This update was developed for use in FS9, but may also work (perhaps with minor differeences) in all versions of FSX.

This version requires considerable reading to be flown accurately. Read the following (best in this order):

1. The FSAviator Propliner Tutorial
      http://www.calclassic.com/tutorials

In the JBK DC4 Panel and Docs V3 OP/Tutorials and Documents folder.

INSTALLATION:

To install into FSX see the If Installing into FSX.txt file in the JBK DC4 Panel and Docs V3 OP/Tutorials and Documents folder.

If you already have the original JBK DC-4 V3 package installed this package will not overwrite it, and both versions can be selected from the Select Aircraft menu. You may also install the V3 package after installing this one, with no problems.

This EXE installer will NOT create a Start Menu entry, registry entry, uninstall program or anything else, other than copying the relevant files to the proper folders. You may install to a temporary folder by pressing the ... button and copying things by hand if you wish.

Quit FS if it is running before installation.

1. Using My Computer or Windows Explorer, examine your FS2004/Aircraft (or FSX/SimObjects/Airplanes) folder for a folder called JBK DC4 1940s C-54_A_B Airline OP. If you find it, you have already installed this package at least once. If updating to a later version, rename the aircraft.cfg file inside it and all the other DC4 OP folders to aircraft_old.cfg. If you have added any extra liveries, you will use this backup file to add the extra livery sections to the new aircraft.cfg file. YOU WILL LOSE YOUR ADDED LIVERY SECTIONS (if any) IF YOU DO NOT BACK UP THESE FILES.

2. Double click this zip file archive to open it. You will find this text file and a file called Setup.exe.

3. Double click the Setup.exe file to start the installation. Press the Run button at the warning screen. If it doesn't find your main FS2004 folder automatically, press the ... button and browse to it. If you are installing into FSX it will NOT find your main FSX folder. Press the ... button and browse to it (it is the folder with FSX.exe in it). If you prefer, press the ... button and install to a temporary folder. Then copy the files and folders manually into FS. Follow the instructions to finish the installation.

4. If installing into FSX, move the folders from the FSX/Aircraft folder to the FSX/SimObjects/Airplanes folder. Again, refer to the If Installing into FSX.txt file in the JBK DC4 Panel and Docs V3 OP/Tutorials and Documents folder for details if installing into FSX. Also, follow the FSX Propliner Tutorial found at http://www.calclassic.com/propliner_tutorial_fsx.htm to get the optimum default view.

5. To add more liveries to these base folders or to replace the liveries you lost during any update of this pacakge follow the instructions found in the Adding Liveries READ FIRST.txt file in the planes' folders.

6. If you are using FS2004 and NOT using a 16:9 widescreen monitor, read the Different Monitors.txt file inside the JBK DC4 Panel and Docs V3 OP/Tutorials and Documents folder for further instructions on how to get the optimum default view.

7. If installing into FS2004, you may activate Doug Dawson's RPM control gauge for a very realistic engine start sequence. Refer to the FS2004 Realistic Engine Start.txt file in the FS2004/Aircraft/JBK DC4 Panel and Docs V3 OP/Tutorials and Documents folder for details.

8. Certain gauges require FSUIPC to be installed into your flight sim program. Get it here: http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html You must install the correct version for your flight sim version!

After installation of all the files, start FS2004/FSX and study the many new options available divided between military and airline users, and then also divided by decade. Especially within FS9 having selected the Douglas folder, make sure you know how to choose the same livery in different decades so that the on screen operating procedures (F10) vary decade by decade.
